What’s going on with the web?

Is it just me or has the general quality of all the web apps collectively gone down?

YouTube: I see more issues with YouTube. Videos don’t load as well as they used to. I’m on a 1Gbps line and the videos keep buffering and sometimes straight up don’t load. Every time I open YT, I’m welcomed with this fucking page. Every. Single. Fucking. Time.

Screenshot of the YouTube homepage featuring navigation tabs for Home, Shorts, and Subscriptions, along with a search bar and a prompt to start searching for videos.

You can tell I’m logged in from the subscriptions. It’s so weird.

Instagram: If someone posts 5 stories, if I can consistently get through all 5 of their stories on the web, I’d consider it a win that day.

GitHub: My favorite web app of all time, by a mile, GitHub, is now riddled with inconsistencies across the app. The Pull Request numbers don’t get updated. A lot of UI inconsistencies with Issues. I feel like React, especially with Virtual DOM + State management helped come up with a consistent way to fix all of these issues. It seems like we are back to where we were before that.

I’m not calling out just these apps. These are just the apps I tend to use more often than the rest. It seems like the general web app quality all across the board has deteriorated.

Now, the important question: Is it just me or do you feel the same way?

  1. You are user/consumer. Why would any multi-billion corporation care about you? They care about your money, time, data, not your feeling. You are already an addict and can’t escape, they do whatever they like. You are walking inside of corporate walled gardens. Those places were not build for you, but for them. The same like your WordPress and the rest of your clusterstack. The problem here is just you.

    1. I wouldn’t consider myself an addict. I’m quite disciplined when it comes to social media. WP is more of a creative outlet for me. And yes, I partially agree with corporations not caring about individual users. But, if the degradation of experience is spread wide enough, it’d be in their best interest to fix it.

Have you debugged your networking? Do you have ad-blockers? Do you experience same issues in different browsers?

Sorry bro. Web enshittification is real and its only going to get worse.

    1. I tested these in Guest mode (Google Chrome) where you can’t install extensions and history is not shared between sessions. It’s just so annoying at this point.
